A top US commander in Afghanistan has come under investigation for his “inappropriate communication” with one of the women involved in the scandal that led to the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus.

The new revelation on Tuesday by a “senior US defense official” threatens the job of yet another top US military commander, General John Allen, who commands US-led foreign troops in Afghanistan under the NATO banner of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), Reuters reported.

According to the senior Pentagon official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the US intelligence body FBI had uncovered between 20,000 to 30,000 pages of communications - mostly emails and spanning from 2010 to 2012 - between Allen and Jill Kelley, who has been widely identified in US media as a long-time family friend of the former CIA director and a volunteer social liaison with military families at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.

It was Kelley’s complaints to the FBI about receiving threatening emails from Petraeus’ mistress, Paula Broadwell, that alerted US authorities to the secret affair of the former CIA director.

Following the reported scandal, Petraeus submitted his resignation to US President Barack Obama on Friday, admitting to holding an extramarital affair.

Meanwhile, the report added that US military chief Leon Panetta announced in a statement to reporters aboard his Tuesday flight to Australia that he had called for the postponement of Allen’s nomination as the Commander of US European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe and that Obama had agreed with the request.

Allen is currently in Washington and is due to face a US Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday.
