At least eight people have been killed and another eight wounded in an attack on a bus carrying civilians near the Syrian border with Lebanon, Press TV reports.

The incident occurred on Thursday when "armed terrorists" opened fire on a bus transporting Syrian workers at the Lebanon border, Syrian officials said.

According to security sources, the victims were killed on the road linking the western city of Homs to the port city of Tartus after the bus left the Lebanese soil.

Survivors said armed men stopped the vehicle in the early hours of day and took the group of workers to a nearby farm.

They say assailants beat the men and later took them back to the bus, where they opened fire on the victims.

The bodies were, however, abandoned near the al-Ariyda border crossing between northern Lebanon and Syria, the sources added.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.

Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factors behind the unrest and deadly violence, but the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in August that the country is engaged in a “crucial and heroic” battle that will determine the destiny of the nation.
