At least 14 people have been injured after supporters of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and opposition candidate Henrique Capriles fought and threw stones in the northern state of Carabobo.

A large crowd of Chavez supporters in red shirts blocked a main road near Bartolome Salom Airport in Puerto Cabello, situated 150 kilometers (93 miles) west of the national capital Caracas, on Wednesday before Capriles’ visit to the coastal town, The Associated Press reported.

A truck used by the opposition candidate’s campaign was set ablaze in the violence, and a motorcycle was also torched.
Moreover, a station wagon filled with Capriles' campaign fliers was badly damaged. The campaign fliers were left scattered on the ground.

Police said.at least 14 people suffered cuts and other minor injuries during the melee.

Capriles arrived at Puerto Cabello in a speed boat. He slammed the violence, saying it was meant to terrify the opposition supporters.

The Venezuelan presidential contender later visited Rancho Grande town, where his followers greeted him.

However, Chavez's supporters blamed the opposition for the Wednesday's clash.

Venezuela will hold a presidential election on October 7, 2012, to choose a president for the six-year term beginning February 2013.

The main candidates are the incumbent Hugo Chavez, representing the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, and opposition candidate Henrique Capriles representing Justice First party. Chavez is bidding for a third term in office.

There are five more candidates from different parties.
