The 9/11 narrative has been created as a gross example of what is known as “American Exceptionalism”, which is the idea that the lives of the people in the United States are far more important than the lives of the people in the rest of the world.”
US President Barack Obama has signed a proclamation, designating the anniversary of the September 11 attacks as the Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. "As we remember the victims, their families, and the heroes who stood up during one of our country's darkest moments, I invite all Americans to reclaim that abiding spirit of compassion by serving their communities in the days and weeks ahead," Obama said in a proclamation released Monday by the White House. In December 2001, the US Congress designated the anniversary of the attacks as the Patriot Day. In April 2009, Congress requested the observance of the anniversary as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance. Meanwhile the ambiguities in the highly controversial terrorist incident of 9/11 have raised questions about the identity of the real perpetrators of such a deadly incident. Many analysts believe the 9/11 attacks were masterminded by the Israeli Mossad and CIA to justify their subsequent aggressions of the Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Press TV has conducted an interview with Caleb Maupin with the International Action Center from New York to shed more light on the 9/11 issue. He is joined by journalist and writer and broadcaster Chris Bambery from London on Press TV’s News Analysis program. The following is an approximate transcript of the interview. Press TV: Mr. Maupin how has the public discourse on 9/11 changed in these past 11 years? Let us first start this debate with how the public’s view on this has changed, if it has? Maupin: Well, after 9/11 there was endless humanization of the victims and the TV news showed numerous times the lives that were affected by this terrorist attack. However after 9/11 the US launched the war on terror and three million people have most likely died as a result of the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and the bombing campaigns but do we ever get to find out who these people are? Do we ever get to hear their names? Do we ever get to find out how these lives have been destroyed by the US? No! We do not. The 9/11 narrative has been created as a gross example of what is known as the “American Exceptionalism,” which is the idea that the lives of the people in the United States are far more important than the lives of the people in the rest of the world. On 9/11 some three thousand people died but millions have died as a result of the US wars around the world; but the media narrative is unconcerned with those people and sees them as just, you know, ‘collateral damage’ to be ignored and to be passed over. And that is the disgusting part of the way the media has presented 9/11. The US, the Pentagon are the greatest terrorists in the world but we never hear about their crimes. Press TV: What do you think is the question that those who are supporting the official view of what happened in 9/11 ask? The question they raise is ‘why would America’ or ‘rather would America’ target so many of its own citizens to go ahead with that agenda if that is the case? Maupin:Well, it is interesting to think about it because I do not know what al-Qaeda gained from this attack, but I do know that George W. Bush and the bankers on Wall Street gained tremendously from 9/11. They were able to invoke the names of the dead innocent people in the twin towers and use them to promote their wars abroad. And so they certainly gained from the attacks far more than any other party, so that is certainly a reason to hold the official story in suspect. We may never know how, to what extent they let this happen or to what extent they were asleep at the wheel, we will never really know; what we do know is that these wars cannot continue and that there are millions of people around the world who have a justifiable hatred for the US government for what was done to their countries. You know, on September 11th 1973 there was a coup d'état, in which the people of Chile had their democratic government overthrown. Twenty thousand people were murdered by Pinochet, a US-backed thug but no one ever talks about that … and there is countless other examples of US aggression abroad but that never is allowed to be part of the narrative, especially not today. There is no parade commemorating the victims, or the millions of the people the US has slaughtered around the world, there is no parade commemorating the people of Vietnam or the people of Korea or the people in Latin America who have been killed by US’ Contras. So the fact that they do not seem to matter in this discourse and the fact that three thousand innocent Americans are now being used to promote more wars abroad which kill more and more people, that is a really disgusting aspect of US society and how much the media is really just an arm of the One Percent to rile up the population to support them and their efforts to reap profit from human death and destruction. Press TV: First of all, when the first questions were officially raised or rather went viral on the Internet about the authenticity of what was announced by the government in America on 9/11; a lot was said about how this is going to be insulting or offensive to the families of those who have been killed in those terrorist attacks and later on the issue of the conspiracy culture people saying that these are all conspiracy theorists …, you cannot verify what they are saying and now people are saying that if some part of the government, basically was involved in this at all, 11 years have passed, how come nobody’s come out and said anything about this? What is your response to that? Maupin: Well, my response is that we will never know, you know, we really do not know. It is interesting that will all of their security apparatus and NORAD [North America Aerospace Defense Command] and all these forces somehow in 9/11 was still pulled off. But we will never know and there is no way to be sure, but it is clear that the way in which the three thousand innocent people have been used; their death has been utilized for propaganda purposes which is very disgusting and …, their families are owed an honest explanation of what happened on 9/11 and they have not gotten that. All they have gotten is drum beating for war, propaganda and more death and that is the only thing that they have gotten and that shows what this system really has to offer. You know, war is a built-in part of the US capitalist economy at this point. Military corporations and contractors are the lifeblood of the One Percent in this country; so it is no surprise that no matter what happens, they will try to utilize it to whip people up into support. The fact that so many people are questioning the narrative of what happened on 9/11, shows that people in this country are waking up and they are starting to question the authoritarian culture in the US where when the government says something and the rulers promote something in their media you just blindly walk behind it and obey it. And the fact that there are so many conspiracy theories and so many different alternative ideas about what happened on 9/11 shows that people in their bones are knowing something is wrong. When there are houses that are empty and have been foreclosed on all throughout of this country, something is clearly wrong; when there is mass unemployment in this country like we have not seen in a long time something is clearly wrong. People are pouring into the streets, they are questioning this and we are starting to see that people of the US start to line up with their true allies, which are people all over the world, which are also victims of the One Percent and the bankers. And they are starting to align with the rest of the world against the bankers and the corporations and that is a very positive development. MY/PKH
