Turkey celebrates 90th Victory Day.
The 90th anniversary of Turkey’s Victory Day was celebrated in Ankara, but President Abdullah Gul could not attend for health reasons. A ceremony was held in Ankara on Thursday at Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. As President Abdullah Gul is currently receiving treatment in an Ankara hospital, in his absence Parliament Speaker Cemil Ciçek led the celebrations at Anitkabir and during a parade at the Ankara Hippodrome. Celebrations for the 90th Victory Day had many symbolic firsts as civilian officials became more visible during the events. Victory Day is celebrated on August 30th every year to commemorate Turkish victories over Greek occupation forces in 1922, during Turkey’s War of Independence. DA/HGL
