Iran's Saba Animation Center has made a documentary based on one of the stories of The Thousand and One Nights directed by Abbas Mohebbi. The Gem of the Seven Seas highlights the struggle between good and evil, and recounts the story of a beautiful island made of emeralds, which is ruled by a foolish dictator. “The soundtrack of the film is now being recorded in a modern studio in the Netherlands,” Mohebbi told ISNA. A group of professional artists and experts has contributed to the production of the 85-minute animation. The Thousand and One Nights collection is of uncertain date and authorship whose tales of Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sindbad the Sailor have become part of the popular Western folklore. Iranian filmmaker and writer Bahram Baizai recently published a book titled Where Are Thousand Legends? that presents proofs and documents of the Persian origins of the story collection. TE/SS
