Pakistan has reiterated the safety of its nuclear arsenal, insisting that the country’s strategic assets are “safe and sound,” Press TV reports.
Addressing reporters in his weekly briefing on Thursday, Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Moazzam Ali Khan said that “Pakistan’s strategic assets are safe and sound and we have a robust command and control in place.”
The official further added that "nobody should worry about the safety and security” of the Asian county’s nuclear assets.
The development came after US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Islamabad’s nuclear assets run the risk of falling into the hands of extremists.
Such concerns have been raised after gunmen attacked a Pakistani Air Force base in the country’s northwest, sparking heavy clashes with security forces in the area.
The attack took place early on Thursday morning at Minhas Airbase in the northwestern town of Kamra, 60 kilometers (37 miles) northwest of Islamabad.
