White House Press Secretary Jay Carney says the US will continue to ‘increase pressure’ on Iran over its nuclear energy program.

The US and its partners will ‘continue to increase pressure on Iran’ until Tehran halts its nuclear energy program, Carney said on Monday.

He added, however, that the Obama administration "continues to believe that there is time and space for diplomacy" with regards to the Iranian nuclear energy issue.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, an allegation vehemently rejected by Iran.

On August 1, the US Congress approved more illegal embargoes against Tehran, which seek to punish banks, insurance companies and shippers that help Tehran sell its oil.

The new US embargoes build on earlier sanctions to penalize other countries for buying or selling Iran’s oil. The sanctions took effect on June 28.

Many prominent international lawyers, including Franklin Lamb and Francis Boyle, contend that Iran is entitled to file a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice against the US, France, the UK and their allies, on behalf of all Iranian citizens being harmed by the illegal sanctions.
