Police cars in front of the Century 16 theater in Aurora, Colorado where a gunman opened fire during the opening of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises".
The US Federal law enforcement officials have identified the suspect in a movie theater shooting earlier on Friday in the city of Aurora near Denver as the 24-year-old James Holms.
The deadly shooting occurred when a masked gunman opened fire at viewers during the screening of the new Batman movie, The Dark Night Rises in Century Theater cinema.
According to eye witnesses, Holmes tossed a tear gas canister before opening fire at viewers killing 12 and injuring 38, some of whom have been reported in critical condition.
Police apprehended Holms without any resistance in the rear parking lot of the theater and keeps trying to find out whether there has been a second gunman assisting him in the crime or not.
"He did not resist. He did not put up a fight," Police Spokesman Frank Fania was quoted as saying.
According to Fania, police officers seized a rifle and a handgun from Holms and found another one at the scene of the crime.
US president Barack Obama issued a statement saying that he was ‘shocked and saddened’ by the bloody shooting spree.
“As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family.” Obama said in his statement.
Though the motives of the American criminal youth still remain unknown, the FBI spokesman Jason Pack told reporters that it did not appear that the incident was related to terrorism.
