Iran's new parliamentarians have elected Ali Larijani as the acting speaker of the country’s ninth Majlis, a day after the fresh assembly was inaugurated.

A total number of 173 lawmakers voted in favor of Larijani's presidency, while his rival Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel gained 100 votes out of the 275 ballots, IRNA reported.

Larijani headed the eighth Majlis during the past four years.

The new legislators also elected Mohammad-Reza Bahonar and Seyyed Mohammad-Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard as the first and second deputies of the Majlis speaker respectively.

The opening ceremony of the ninth Majlis was held on Sunday with a message from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

The Leader hailed the opening of the 290-member Majlis, describing it as the Islamic Republic’s “powerful message” to the world.
