An Iranian lawmaker says the NATO missile shield in Turkey is a conspiracy as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is only interested in protecting US interests in the region.
“The US has deployed the missile system in Turkey only to expand its domination on regional countries,” Head of Iran-Turkey Parliamentary Friendship Group Ali Akbar Aqaei-Moghanjuee said on Wednesday.
Aqaei-Moghanjuee added that the deployment of a missile system would only provide grounds for hostility to arouse between Ankara and regional Muslims, Majlis official news agency, ICANA reported.
“The Turkish nation should know that NATO only seeks to take measures against Islamic countries in the region through invading and taking advantage of this country (Turkey),” the Iranian lawmaker said.
Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal announced the country's decision to host the missile shield on September 2.
Turkey says NATO's missile system aims to strengthen the alliance's “defense capacity and strengthen [Turkey's] national defense system,” and does not target any specific country.
Following Ankara's announcement, Russia criticized the plan and criticized NATO efforts to advance eastward.
This is while the Russian Foreign Ministry has said Turkey's collaboration would mark another step in the direction of the deployment "of the European segment of a global US missile defense system.”
