As Iran's post-election tension continues to make headlines, a national security committee steps in to meet Iranian officials and senior clerics in Qom to discuss measures to resolve the crisis.

Members of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission are scheduled to meet senior clerics Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi and Ayatollah Morteza Moqtadayi in Qom on Monday to address the issue of turmoil in the country over the election results.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, Head of Iran's Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission told ISNA that the committee's governing board held a meeting with former president Mohammad Khatami on Sunday and discussed the latest situation in the country.

According to Boroujerdi, officials attending the meeting expressed grave concern about the political damages brought about on a domestic and international scale in the course of recent protests in Iran.

"The lawmakers asked Mr. Khatami to help resolve the current issues and he vowed support," the Majlis official said.

"We should make every effort to win back the trust of a certain segment of the society. We should all try to resolve the current problems so that the society moves toward peace," Boroujerdi quoted Khatami as saying.

Earlier in the month, the commission's governing board held meetings with Head of Iran's Expediency Council, Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, and Mir-Hossein Mousavi, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's main rival in the elections.

The National Security Commission, which aims to end the post-election turmoil in the country through discussing the situation with senior officials, is also scheduled to hold a meeting with President Ahmadinejad.
