Israel has released the Hamas speaker of the Palestinian parliament Aziz Dweik who was jailed for nearly three years in Tel Aviv.

"He was freed from the Hadarim prison (near Tel Aviv) and he is on his way toward the Shaer Ephraim checkpoint" in the north of the occupied West Bank, Dweik's lawyer Fadi Qawasmeh told AFP on Tuesday.

Israeli officials also confirmed the report.

Dweik, 60, was imprisoned by Israel along with dozens of legislators and officials in the occupied West Bank in 2006.
