US detention camp at Guantanamo Bay
A US Senator has called upon President Barack Obama to keep the 'humane' Guantanamo Bay detention camp open for prisoners of war.

Democrat Senator Joe Lieberman's Senate office has confirmed a statement in which the senator is quoted as saying that the president “should seriously consider” keeping the notorious US naval base detention center open in order to accommodate future suspects on the leased Cuban territories.

“Though I understand the President had a good intention in saying that he would close Guantanamo, because Guantanamo has become a symbol for past bad behavior by the United States, but maybe we just have to say, look, today it's as humane a facility as you're gonna find for prisoners of war, and we have to explain to the rest of the world that that's the place we have chosen to keep prisoners of war,” the Huffington Post quoted the 72-year-old Connecticut senator's statement as saying.

The White House announced plans earlier this year for the transfer of Gitmo detainees to pave the way for the closure of the 'torture' site but it has since drawn opposition ire who eyes the bid as a threat to US national security.

Lieberman's move is seen as a reflection of both Congressional caucuses' positions, which might put Obama under fire from his plan to release around 250 inmates held indefinitely at Guantanamo Bay.

Human rights groups have frequently blasted United States' for its use of 'torture' on Gitmo captives in order to elicit information from the so-called 'terror suspects' captured around the world.

The US does not recognize the detainees as prisoners of war, and has refused to grant them the privileges and rights that such classification would entail.

Furthermore, the vast most detainees have never been charged with any offence and are kept at the camp indefinitely.

Human rights organizations say that any future moves by the US to continue running Guantanamo and other 'black sites' globally would only fuel further anti-US sentiments.
