Tens of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of Spain's cities to protest against a new abortion plan proposed by the government.
The demonstrators marched through the streets of Madrid and other Spanish cities on Sunday carrying banners 'There is no right to kill; There is the right to live' and 'Women yes, abortion no'.
The angry protesters opposed the reform plan and called on the Equality Minister, Bibiana Aido, to resign as they chanted 'Get out of here and let the children live.'
The protestors also called on the socialist Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to withdraw the legislation and warned that this was just the start of their protests.
Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega however responded to protests, saying the objective of the new law was to give judicial security to women, respect their rights, and give security to health professionals.
Spain's Equality Ministry is drafting the controversial law, which would ease restriction on abortion demands.
Earlier this month a government-appointed panel of experts recommended that Spain ease its restrictions on abortion and allow the procedure on demand up to 14 weeks into a pregnancy, AFP reported.
The protestors said that the new law would lead to more deaths and would violate the right for human beings to live.
