Badminton's world-number-one Lee Chong Wei says it is his responsibility as an international player to help those in need.
Malaysian Badminton sensation Lee Chong Wei has joined athletes David Beckham and Roger Federer to become a UN goodwill ambassador.

The 27-year-old Malaysian will join the ranks of sports personalities representing the UN Children's Fund, including cricket legend Ravi Shastri and tennis star Ana Ivanovic.

"I am determined to maintain a good image and be a good role model. Hopefully, I will be able to inspire many children along the way," The Star quoted Lee as saying.

UNICEF representative to Malaysia Youssouf Oomar believes Lee is an ideal role model for young citizens, as he is loved by "every Malaysian". "Lee is not just a champion in badminton but he is also a champion in promoting child welfare," he said.

Lee, who was victorious in the World Super Series Masters Finals last year, had earlier expressed desire to play an active role in UNICEF programs when he is not away at international tournaments.

"It is one of my responsibilities as an international player to help those in need and to promote children's programmes," Badminton's world-number-one told The Star.
