Serbian archeologists claim that they have unearthed a Roman spa during a restoration project in the country's southern Prokuplje town.
The spa was found during reconstruction work at the town's local church of Sv. Prokopije, B92.net reported.
Archeologist, Julka Kuzmanovic-Cvetkovic, believes the discovery is significance as it places Prokuplje on Serbia's map of ancient Roman sites, known as the Trail of Roman Emperors.
"The discovery is exceptional, because until now we knew little about Hameum. We knew of this Roman temple and that there are remains of a fort on the Hisar hill that we have not dug up yet. These structures are another significant addition, as they show us where the urban nucleus likely was," said Kuzmanovic-Cvetkovic.
Comparable to modern fitness centers, Roman spas are believed to have been visited by the wealthiest and most respected residents of ancient Hameum.
