Nuclear energy in Merkel's clutches

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has spurned her predecessor's decision for the country's long-term riddance of its nuclear power.
On Monday, Merkel won backing from her party Christian Democratic Union (CDU) as well as its sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) for her outright disapproval of the former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder administration's decision.
The 'absolutely wrong' plan for a phased-out decommissioning of Germany's safe nuclear plants until 2021 defied an affordable energy policy, Merkel maintained.
The German chancellor reminded that no other nation has gone along with losing its safe nuclear facilities.
The Social Democrats (SPD), who together with the Greens formed Schroeder's coalition, however, have unflinchingly displayed stiff resistance to nuclear energy.
