Iran's UN envoy Mohammad Khazaee says the greatest threat to the international community is posed by countries with nuclear weapons.

"The US has spent millions of dollars to develop a new generation of nuclear weapons… and has therefore failed to fulfill its obligations according to Article 6 of the Non-Proliferation Treaty," Khazaee said Wednesday, addressing the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

"The greatest threat to regional and international security is posed by states that have nuclear arsenals," he added.

The Iranian ambassador said such countries have broken their oath to never 'develop, produce, acquire, stockpile or retain chemical weapons, or transfer, directly or indirectly, chemical weapons to anyone' and can therefore not be seen as a role-model for other countries.

Khazaee also criticized the West's double-standard approach that deprives NPT signatories of attaining nuclear technology for civilian purposes.
