Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has dismissed claims that he supported US presidential candidate Barack Obama in a recent interview.

“I have never voiced support for Barack Obama. I merely said they would not allow him to become the US President,” Ahmadinejad said after a Wednesday cabinet meeting.

“We believe they will find a way of keeping him out of the White House, even if the entire American nation votes for him,” he added.

The Iranian President went on to say all US talks of unity are empty words and Washington is plagued with internal conflicts.

Ahmadinejad was referring to his Sunday interview with the Spanish El Pais newspaper, in which he said he would have no problem meeting with Barack Obama if the US presidential candidate was elected, but he did not believe it was possible for Obama to win.

"It makes no difference to us who wins (the US election)," he said.
