The Lebanese army has dismissed Israeli reports that two rockets were fired early Tuesday from Lebanon into northern Israel as false.

"The reports are false, there were no rockets fired from Lebanon today," a Lebanese army spokesman said.

"There were conflicting news coming from Israel as well," he added.

Israeli police said earlier that two 107-millimetre Katyusha rockets slammed into northern Israel from Lebanon overnight, but the Israeli army at one point said the explosions were from old rockets fired during the 33-day 2006 war.

According to the Associated Press, a senior military officer in Beirut who spoke on condition of anonymity also said the Israeli report was "baseless and completely fabricated."

Yasmina Bouziane, a spokeswoman for the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) said its specialists were examining the incident. "In the meantime, we can't confirm or deny" the Israeli claims.
