US Presidential hopeful Ron Paul has said hawkish and warmongering neoconservatives have taken control of the Republican Party.

In an interview with HuffPost's OffTheBus, the presidential candidate said he is a Republican himself, 'just not the same kind as the rest of them'.

The 72-year-old Texas congressman added that the 'traditional conservative -which the Republicans used to be- did not advocate aggressive war'.

"I think they're really liberal in the modern sense of the word--they're big spenders, they believe in entitlements, they believe in military adventurism," said Paul who was one of the only six Republicans in the House that voted against the Iraq War.

Paul strongly opposes any kind of military attack carried out against the Constitution, saying the US must withdraw its troops from Iraq as soon as possible.
