Recent studies suggest that getting seven to eight hours of nightly sleep on a regular basis can help prevent diabetes and delay death.

According to the article published in the journal of Sleep, mortality is reported to be higher in 4 groups of patients:

- Individuals who consistently get less than five hours of nightly sleep,
- Individuals who consistently get more than nine hours of nightly sleep,
- Individuals who start out with six to eight hours of nightly rest but later get less sleep
- Individuals who start out with seven to eight hours of nightly rest but later get more sleep.

In a similar study, researchers reported developing diabetes to be linked with getting less than five hours or more than nine hours of nightly sleep.

It seems that getting too little sleep may impede glucose metabolism in the body, whereas too much sleep is associated with other health problems.
