The Iraqi Association of Muslim Scholars (AMS) says the government and the multi-national forces are responsible for the Mosul dam decline.

A recent report had warned that the dam was in danger of collapse.

"The AMS accuses the occupation forces, which is behind every deterioration in Iraq, and the Iraqi government that totally ignores such a crisis and its resulting consequences," AMS said in a statement.

"There were contradictory opinions about the possibility of the dam collapse ... The situation needs to be looked into accurately and seriously," the statement added.

Based on a DPA report the AMS has called for an immediate examination of the dam by Iraqi specialists who had worked on the project.

Iraq had dismissed earlier a US government report warning that the country's largest dam in the northern city of Mosul could collapse and cause a catastrophe for thousands.

Mosul, the capital of the northern province of Nineveh, has a population of 1.7 million.
