A Syrian daily says all efforts by Arab states to solve Lebanese political crisis would be fruitless unless the US stops meddling in Lebanon.

"Syria thinks that [Arab League Chief] Amr Mussa's mission will go nowhere unless (US ambassador to Lebanon) Jeffrey Feltham and other ambassadors active in Beirut stop putting" a spanner in the works, an official Syrian newspaper said Tuesday.

The ambassadors are undermining Amr Mussa's mission to hinder Arab efforts, Ath-Thawra said in an editorial a day after a visit by Mussa.

The article said those efforts would not lead anywhere unless they were protected from US and Israeli interference, and Arab problems could not be resolved if there was foreign meddling.

Mussa called for continued efforts to resolve the political crisis in Lebanon after a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian capital on Monday.

Lebanon has been deadlocked since November when six opposition ministers quit the Prime Minister Fuad Siniora's US-backed government, charging it was riding roughshod over the power-sharing arrangements in force since the 1975-1990 civil war.

The opposition coalition, led by Hezbollah, insists on formation of a national unity government.
