Only 68% of Republicans support Bush's policies.
A new poll has shown George Bush's approval rating has plunged to a record low, with only 29 percent of the respondents endorsing him.

According to a poll conducted by USA Today/Gallup released on Tuesday, Bush's approval rating has declined to 29 percent, compared to 33 percent in June and 38 percent in April.

Opposition to the Iraq war in the United States is also at a record high while 70 percent of Americans support a complete withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

Some 62 percent of the people surveyed believe the United States was wrong in sending troops into Iraq and only one in five Americans think Bush's troop 'surge' theory had any effect.

The results come at a time when US lawmakers are to rethink their policies on Iraq and Republicans are losing faith in Bush's ability to handle the presidency.

Only two-thirds of Republicans support Bush while they had given him an approval rating of 82 percent at the beginning of his second term in office in 2004.

Nearly four in 10 Republicans say they have lost confidence in Bush because of his handling of the immigration issue. Bush pushed for a major reform that would have offered a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants but the proposal was defeated in Congress.

Two-thirds of the Republicans believed Bush was not in line when he intervened to change Lewis "Scooter" Libby's prison sentence. Libby is a former senior aide to George Bush who was convicted of perjury.

Sixty percent of the people surveyed said the United States economy is worse now than it was five years ago.

Although Bush had one of the highest approval ratings among all US presidents after the September 11 attacks, his performance has led to him being considered as one of the least approved presidents in US history.

Some 1,014 adults have participated in the survey.
