Bottom-placed Jordan dismays Group E leader Iran with a 1-0 victory in Amman, leaving the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification wide open with two more matches to go.
Afshin Qotbi's squad lined up against Adnan Hamad's side on a calm and quiet Sunday evening. However, Amer Deeb managed to strike past Iran goalie Mehdi Rahmati 11 minutes from time, to secure his side's first victory in the competition.
Despite being one goal down, Iran continued to produce a stagnant performance to concede a disappointing defeat at King Abdullah International Stadium.
"Iran was missing two of its stars, Javad Nekounam and Masoud Shojaei. The two are significant players, who could have played an important role in the match," Iran manager Afshin Qotbi said after the defeat.
Currently Iran is leading the table with 7 points, followed by Singapore that has 6 points. Thailand is third with 5 points, while Jordan only has 4. Iran will qualify, should it win at least one of the upcoming matches.
Iran will take on Singapore in Bishan Stadium on January 6, and will play host to Thailand in Azadi Stadium in March. Jordan, in January, will meet Thailand in Bangkok, before hosting Singapore in March.
