Rescuers recovered bodies of victims of a sunken ferry on a ship off the coast of Karimun Island, Riau province, November 22, 2009.
At least 245 people have been rescued from the sea after an overloaded ferry sank in bad weather off Indonesia's Riau islands.

At least 29 people died and 17 people were still missing in the accident, Reuters reported on Sunday.

Sources said rescue efforts had been hampered by bad weather and high waves.

Indonesia relies heavily on ferry services to connect the many islands in the sprawling archipelago.

Ferry accidents are common, largely due to the tendency to overload the vessels.
