In clashes between protesters and Egyptian riot police in Cairo, some people have been arrested and some policemen have been injured.

The violence erupted near the Algerian Embassy early on Friday after Algeria defeated Egypt 1-0 at the 2010 World Cup qualifier.

Police said on Friday that 35 policemen were hurt but gave no details on the number of protesters injured.

Furious demonstrators also hurled stones and firebombs and damaged 15 cars, chanting anti-Algerian slogans, according to police officials.

Earlier, Egypt recalled its ambassador from Algeria for consultations and summoned the Algerian envoy in Cairo to protest after Algerian fans attacked Egyptian firms and homes in Algiers.

Protesters attacked 15 offices belonging to a local subsidiary of Egypt's Orascom Telecom, prompting the company to pull its 25 Egyptian employees and their families out, and twice ransacked the Algiers offices of EgyptAir.

On Saturday, President Hosni Mubarak promised that Cairo would be firm in dealing with those who harm Egyptians.

"Egypt will not be lax with those who harm the dignity of its sons," he said in a speech to parliament.

"The welfare of our citizens abroad is the responsibility of the country. We look after their rights and reject violations and transgressions against them," said Mubarak.
