Amid an increase in the number of attacks on military targets across Pakistan, an ambush and a road side bomb have killed 10 Pakistani troops in the northwestern parts of the country.

Pakistani military said on Wednesday that the attack took place on the outskirts of Safi town in Mohmand tribal district.

"Eight soldiers were martyred and two were wounded when their vehicle hit a landmine buried on the roadside," AFP news agency quoted Major Fazal ur-Rehman, a spokesman for the paramilitary Frontier Corps, as saying.

The troops have been operating for over a year against the militants in Mohmand that borders Afghanistan.

In a separate incident, the militants left two paramilitary troops dead and eight others missing after they attacked a military convoy nearby at Ghanam Shah on Wednesday.

Pakistan's tribal regions have experienced interminable cycles of violence since Islamabad joined Washington's so-called “war on terror” following the 9/11 attacks.

Over 475 militants and about 50 soldiers have been killed since a military operation was launched in the mountainous terrain of South Waziristan on October 17.
