At least two people have lost their lives and 28 others have been seriously wounded as a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims overturned in Syria.

The accident took place early Tuesday when the bus crashed into a rock in a road between the city of Halab and Qara, a small village 100 kilometers northwest of capital Damascus, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting website quoted an official from Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization in Syria Massoud Akhavan as saying.

He added that the driver's drowsiness caused the accident.

The bus was carrying Iranian pilgrims from the western city of Hamedan.

Iran's medical teams were instantly dispatched to the location and the injured were taken to local hospitals, Akhavan said.
