Amid a wave of militants attacks on military targets in Pakistan, unidentified assailants have opened fire on the vehicle of an army brigadier in Islamabad, officials say.
Police sources said Brigadier Sohail and his driver came under attack while travelling in a jeep through a residential neighborhood in the capital on Friday morning.
The victims are said to have sustained injuries from small arms in the assault, according to medical sources.
It was one of several attacks in less than three weeks, targeting senior army commanders and military installations in the capital.
A Pakistani brigadier on leave from a UN peacekeeping mission was shot dead in the capital in late October.
In addition, dozens were killed in the assault on the army headquarters near Islamabad in early October.
There has been a surge in attacks across the insurgency-hit country since the Pakistani army launched an operation in the restive South Waziristan region that borders Afghanistan.
Militants have targeted an Islamic university, military headquarters, government buildings and crowded markets across the South Asian country over the past few weeks.
The Pakistani army says, about 400 militants and 40 soldiers have so far been killed since the operation was launched in the mountainous terrain on October 17.
