The following is parts of an exclusive Press TV interview with Javed Ibrahim Paracha, a former member of Pakistan's National Assembly and the chairman of World Prisoners Relief Commission of Pakistan, on a new US decision to pay the Taliban who abandon their weapons in neighboring Afghanistan.
Press TV: You have been recently quoting as saying that the United States has approached you once again to initiate talks with the Taliban, is that true?
Paracha: The United States did not directly approach me, but some middlemen in the mediocre did approach me and they were asking about dialogue with the US, and I told them that before dialogue there must be introduction.
I can give my solid response about the dialogue if, and, once I am satisfied with the identity of these persons; or if it were confirmed that they were senior US diplomats. But without knowing, I will not be ready to take any risk about the dialogue or anything else.
Press TV: According to the US officials, you had been offered USD 500,000 during a meeting with the US Undersecretary of State Karen Hughes in 2005. What is your stance on the issue?
Paracha: The US had centered its policy on Pakistan during Pervez Musharraf period. During that time a delegation of senior US officials had visited the quake-hit areas of Pakistan in 2005. They held an 8-hour long meeting with me in Islamabad Serena Hotel in order to persuade me into cooperation.
They had offered me to bear all expenditures including those relating to office, logistic and mediations in return for my cooperation with the US State Department as the Taliban mediator. But I made clear to them that everybody cannot be purchased.
Press TV: Have you received any fund form the US for your mediation activities?
Paracha: No, never. Several agents have been contacting me in this regard since some past years; however they were not in a position to give me a proper response.
Press TV: If the US were officially talking to you, would you accept any payment in term of being a mediator?
Paracha: If there is a true and real talk of peace in Afghanistan and Pakistan, I am ready to play a role of coordinator. And if I know that the US President Barack Obama was sincere in maintaining peace in the region, surely, I would remain standby for coordination.
