A British lawmaker says the 'great majority' of UK troops deployed in Afghanistan must be withdrawn from the war-torn country.

In an article in the Guardian, Kim Howells, chairman of the intelligence and security committee at the British parliament, said the money allocated for the unpopular war should be diverted to protect Britain from terrorist attacks.

"Britain's own security is at risk if we again allow Afghanistan to become a safe haven for terrorists," the former labor minister said.

Howells added that after seven years of war in Afghanistan, the people of Britain are asking if sending troops — at the cost of soldiers' lives and taxpayer's money — is the most effective way to prevent terrorism in the UK.

Howells was a supporter of the British involvement in the war in Afghanistan when it began in 2001.

Despite the oversized military presence of American and NATO forces, Afghanistan has been witnessing the highest level of violence this year.

The tension did not spare the August 20 presidential election, raising further questions as to the effectiveness of the military presence in Afghanistan.
