Pakistan's army claimed Sunday to have killed dozens of militants on the first day of an operation against an al-Qaeda and Taliban sanctuary close to the Afghan border.
A former Pakistani military official has warned that the country's nuclear assets could be the next target of the militants.

“If the militants could attack the most secured military head quarter in Rawalpindi and the police training centers in Lahore... then definitely their next target would be the nuclear enrichment program at Kahota (Islamabad),” the former military chief Aslam Baig told Press TV in an exclusive interview Sunday.

Baig added that the political and military leadership of Pakistan will have to stop these terrorists who are apparently heading towards the country's nuclear assets.

“The militants have sent a strong message, that by attacking a military compound they can hit anyone, anywhere anytime. So the government has to be more vigilant,” he said.

He urged Islamabad to take the utmost security measures for the protection of its nuclear installations.

The remarks by the former military chief came days after a spate of militant attacks on security force installations, including the military headquarter in Garrison City of Rawalpindi, and the police training school in Lahore had left more than 150 people dead.
