The Pakistani government says its fighter jets have bombed hideouts of suspected pro-Taliban militants in Bajur, killing at least 31 alleged insurgents.

"Jet fighters bombed various Taliban hideouts in Mamoond district of Bajaur," local government official, Manasib Khan told AFP on Monday.

"The latest reports said that at least 12 militants were killed and nine were wounded in the air strikes," he added.

Monday's assault came after the militants attacked the army's headquarters in Rawalpindi on Saturday and took some soldiers hostage. At least 19 were killed in the Rawalpindi raid.

The military also launched two air strikes Sunday evening on suspected militant targets in South Waziristan, according to intelligence officials.

"Pakistani fighter jets bombed hideouts at Makeen and Ladha towns," said Syed Shahab Ali Shah, the area's top administrative official.

"We have reports that at least 19 militants were killed in both Makeen and Ladha," said a security official in South Waziristan's main town, Wana.
