At least six people have been killed and eight others have been injured after a series of explosions ripped through an ammunition factory in Western Serbia.

Serbian police and military cordoned off the Prvi Partizan ammunition factory in the western Serbian town of Uzice on Thursday after four blasts blew up some sections in the military plant.

"Rescuers found six bodies inside an ammunition loading facility. That's the death toll. The injured people have been hospitalized," Deputy Interior Minister Predrag Maric told reporters.

The situation has been brought under control after firefighters "doused the fires and there is no danger of more explosions," Maric went on to say.

Authorities are investigating the root cause of the underground blasts. "It's dark down there and no one knows what caused the explosions," the town's Mayor Jovan Markovic noted.

The unit churns out Serbia's largest ammunition supplies including explosives and detonation devices, some of which are exported worldwide.
