A senior Iranian cleric says a parliamentary revision of the presidential election law is needed to prevent post-vote unrest in the future.

Tehran's Interim Friday Prayers Leader Ayatollah Mohammad Emami-Kashani urged the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) to take necessary measures and address the current shortcomings in the Iranian election code.

"The Parliament should rectify the election code of conduct in whatever way it deems necessary," said Emami-Kashani.

The modification of Iran's election law became a topic of discussion after sporadic protests followed the re-election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on June 12.

Tehran's mayor, Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, was the first to propose the revision of the electoral code of conduct in Iran.

Qalibaf said on June 24 that there are certain "flaws" in Iran's electoral law, which have caused difficulties during the process of the election and the counting of the votes.

"The fact is that there have long been problems in our country's electoral law, which has never been reformed," he had said during an interview with IRIB channel 2.
