Honduran congress leader named president
Sun, 28 Jun 2009 21:31:27 GMT
New Honduran President Roberto Micheletti
Honduran congressional leader, Roberto Micheletti, has been designated to replace the ousted president Jose Manuel Zelaya.

Former president Zelaya was detained and flown to Costa Rica by coup soldiers on Sunday, leaving the position vacant.

A resolution read on the floor of Congress accuses Zelaya of "manifest irregular conduct" and "putting in present danger the state of law," for his refusal to obey a Supreme Court ruling against a constitutional referendum he wanted to hold.

Zelaya, a close ally of the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, was seeking to remove the limits on presidential terms through a referendum, paving the way for his re-election.

Later in the day Congress approved the removal of Zelaya, and cited constitutional articles that said the head of congress assumes the presidency in such cases.

The body had earlier read and approved a supposed letter of resignation from Zelaya, who claims the document is false.

The threat to Micheletti does not come from Caracas - it comes from all Hondurans who support democracy. Who wanted the coup? - those afraid of democracy - Hondurans were about to got to the polls to elect a constitutional assembly that would enshine human rights in the constitution. President Zelaya was the popularly elected president. He and the recently assasinated Socialist Leader were seen as a threat to the oligarchs.

This whole thing smells of Washington. Why were the Cuban, Venezuelan and Nicaraguan ambassadors detained? How come none of the pro-Western ambassadors were detained?

The Yankee curse is difficult to shake off but it can be done. Sounds a lot like the Chavez 48 hr coup which was enthusiastically supported by only one country in the world, the USA. Come on people! You are the real power!

This is the result of military, judicial bodies are not on peoples and their elected president sides. Hondurans should fight agaisnt such injustice and the US backed dictatorship, and return their president to power. I hope him success as other leftist Latin American presidents did.

Do you have any proof or are you just shooting your mouth off? Please tells us. Hugo, your friend, has already threatened the Hondurans today. America said about the same thing as they said to Iran.

This is a CIA baby, probably Obama is not to blame, but teh right wing reactionary forces in Washing are working overtime to bring Honduras under the USA umbrella of death. Every country under the USA control ends up in chaos, death and destruction. The democracy in Honduras must survived and Zelaya returned to Honduras.
