Iran's international book fair is an annual event that lasts for 12 days.

For the past 25 years it has become one the cultural events of spring, and a bit of a social event of too, with people meeting up to explore the stalls together.

Iran's book fair is one of the biggest in the world, and is held in all the major provinces. In Tehran alone it attracts around 500,000 people every day.

Most of them are school children and university students, coming to take advantage of the 10 to 25 percent discount on the books. This year's fair started on the 2nd of May 2012.

4000 publishers, international organizations and embassies from 80 countries have set up stalls in Tehran's Mosallah prayer ground and are offering around 400,000 books in various categories.

The books at the fair can be divided into two main sections: domestic publications and international publications. Domestic publications are the university press, additional education material, academic books, children's books, and books on general topics.

The international section has 5 different parts. Section A is where buyers can take advantage of government subsidies, to purchase books published after 2010. That's 22,600 titles.

The goal is to help students and professors access up-to-date material. Section B offers earlier publications at their original price, that's 85,000 titles.

In Section C various countries or their embassies set up stalls, that's 10,000 titles. In section D called World Book Corner, books printed by Iranian publishers for international readers are on offer, and in the E section you can buy electronic books.
