Iran elects new president

Vote counting has finished after a runoff vote was held for Iran’s snap presidential election on Friday, with Masoud Pezeshkian declared the winner against his rival Saeed Jalili. Pezeshkian, a lawmaker and former health minister received over 53 percent of the votes while Jalili, a former chief nuclear negotiator trailed with over 44 percent. According to Iran’s interior ministry, the voter runoff in the second round of the presidential election was around 50 percent, up about 10 percent compared to the first round. 69-year-old Pezeshkian had advocated for moderate policies at home and improved relations with the West during his campaigning. After initial results were released early on Saturday, Pezeshkian’s supporters took to the streets to celebrate his potential final victory in many cities, including his hometown, Tabriz. 

US-Israeli genocide in Gaza

It's almost nine months into the Israeli genocidal on the Gaza Strip, the regime’s relentless air and artillery strikes claim the lives of more Palestinians across the blockaded territory. In one of the latest attacks, several Palestinians were killed and a number of others injured after Israeli warplanes targeted the al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. Elsewhere in the Nuseirat refugee camp, 10 Palestinians, including three journalists, were killed and several others injured in the bombing of a residential building. Separately, an Israeli airstrike left three people killed and several injured. And in the southern city of Rafah, at least six Palestinians were killed after an Israeli air raid hit a police car in the Shakoush area. The Israeli war on Gaza began last October. Since then, more than 38,000 people have been killed and over 87,000 injured.

Hezbollah-Israel clashes

Lebanan’s resistance movement, Hezbollah has conducted fresh operations targeting Israeli military positions. Hezbollah said it has launched a number of rockets, targeting a barracks in the settlement of Kiryat Shmona in northern occupied territories. The Lebanese resistance group also targeted a building used by Israeli soldiers in the occupied Shlomi settlement. Meanwhile, Israeli media sources said the regime’s forces fired shells on the outskirts of al-Fakhar and Kfar Shuba in southern Lebanon. Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire on an almost daily basis since Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza.
