India enacts controversial anti-Muslim citizenship law weeks before elections

India says it will enact the Citizenship Amendment Act that provides fast track naturalization for multiple religious groups who fled to India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan before 2014. The law, however, excludes Muslims from those countries. Back in 2019, the law’s approval sparked deadly protests across the country and has been halted since. The Muslim minority in India fears the government is using this law and other similar laws to widen a crackdown on them.
