French unrest has spilled over into neighboring Switzerland, with dozens of protesters holding a demonstration in the French-speaking Swiss city of Lausanne.

Police attacked the protesters in Lausanne on Saturday evening and arrested six teenagers.

Protests in France were sparked by the police killing of 17-year-old French-Algerian Nahel M last month.

"Quite clearly, what emerges from what we have seen is that these young people during the night were inspired by the situation in France," a Lausanne police spokesman told AFP.

Seven persons – six of whom were minors and five of foreign origin – were arrested and taken to the police station.

The protests began "following several calls on social media," police said.

Several shop windows were smashed, particularly in the Flon district and on rue de Genève, the Lausanne police said in a statement issued on Saturday night.

Around 50 police officers were deployed to control the protesters. No injuries were reported.

An investigation has been opened by the Lausanne judicial police, under the supervision of the canton’s public prosecutor's office.

France saw a fifth night of protests on Saturday in which more than a thousand people were arrested.

The teenager’s death was captured on video, which spread on social media and fueled anger over police violence against minorities, exposing severe racial tensions in France.

The protests also spread to Belgium on Thursday, where 63 people have been arrested so far.
