'No matter where you stand,' 2020 election is over: Republican ex-gov. Christie

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says the 2020 presidential election, which former President Donald Trump lost, is now over, although many of his supporters keep sticking to the idea that it was stolen in favor of now-President Joe Biden.

“We can no longer talk about the past, and the past elections. No matter where you stand on that issue, no matter where you stand, it is over. And every minute that we spend talking about 2020, while we're wasting time doing that, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are laying ruin to this country,” Christie said at the annual Republican Jewish Coalition leadership meeting.

Christie, who has mostly been on Trump’s side since his nomination for the 2016 presidential election, further suggested that Republican voters should focus on future elections, namely the 2022 midterms and the 2024 presidential election.

“We better focus on that, and take our eyes off the rearview mirror and start looking through the windshield again,” he added.

Christie is among the few Republicans speaking out against Trump’s refusal to concede defeat in the latest presidential election. Others have either been promoting the idea or keeping silent about it.

Most of Trump’s supporters reportedly believe that widespread fraud took place and that Trump is the true president, allegations dismissed by US courts.

Trump previously filed a federal lawsuit against the Jan. 6 select committee in an attempt to block the panel from obtaining his administration's records from the US National Archives.

Biden ordered the archives to provide the latest documents 30 days after notifying Trump unless a court intervenes.

Since Jan. 6, Democrats have been arguing that the protest by pro-Trump fans was an insurrection based on disinformation spread by the former president, who alleges that he is the true victor of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump is often cited by US media as the one inciting his supporters to storm the Congress premises in the hope of overturning the election results.

Christie’s latest remarks appear as an attempt to offer a new narrative for the GOP discourse in the run-up to the electoral races.
