Tulip Festival in St. Petersburg displays over 200,000 plants

Visitors came out to gaze at the colorful splendor nearly 200,000 plants at the annual Tulip Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The event, held in Kirov Central Park, is the city's largest celebration in spring. St. Petersburg's tulip festival is second only to the flower festival in the Netherlands in terms of scale. It features around 100 varieties of tulips, 15 of which are extremely rare.

The tulip was once a royal adornment in Russia. Every year a classical music concert and traditional dance performance are held during the festival. This year the city also invited contemporary artists to showcase their art in the event.

St. Petersburg has invited famous contemporary Russian painters, poets and musicians to promote traditional Russian culture to the public through colorful artistic performances, organizers said. This year's Tulip Festival will run until May 30.
