Defense Secretary Wallace implicitly admits to Moscow destruction in event of war
The Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, has tried to defend the government’s decision to increase the country’s nuclear arsenal from 180 warheads to 260 on the grounds that Russian defenses have gotten stronger in recent years.
Speaking to the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show (March 21), Wallace claimed the UK had decided to lift the cap on nuclear warheads by 44 percent in order to “defeat” improved missile defenses, an area the Russian Federation has allegedly fortified.
“You have to make sure they [warheads] aren’t vulnerable to ballistic missile defense otherwise they no longer become credible”, Wallace told Marr.
Wallace’s statement is an implicit admission that the UK still operates the Cold War era so-called Moscow Criterion, which envisages British nuclear warheads defeating Russian anti-missile defenses around Moscow, thus effectively obliterating the Russian capital.
In recent years there have been growing calls on the government to abandon this Cold War era doctrine but Wallace’s latest statement coupled with the contents of the newly-released Integrated Review are a strong indication the UK is committed to the destruction of the Russian capital in the event of war.
The Integrated Review is the most far-reaching recalibration of UK defense, security and foreign policy since the end of the Cold War more than 30 years ago.
