A journalist who covered gruesome crime has been found beheaded in Mexico, the latest in a series of high-profile acts of violence aimed at media workers in the Latin American country.

The body of Julio Valdivia, 44, was found in Tezonapa municipality, located about 100 kilometers from the country’s eastern state of Veracruz, on Wednesday.

Valdivia specialized in “nota roja” journalism, which focuses on gruesome crime and violence, and had written about crime in Veracruz.

A staff member at the Diario El Mundo local newspaper, who spoke to Reuters anonymously, said it was suspected that Valdivia might have been run over by a train, but that was ruled out by the prosecutor’s office.

Valdivia was the fourth journalist to have been killed in Mexico so far this year.

The Veracruz government condemned the act of violence against the journalist in a post on its Twitter account. “We condemn the homicide of Julio Valdivia,” it said.

A local media protection group known as the CEAPP said in a statement that Valdivia had not had extra protection as he had not reported threats to his security. However, the group demanded that authorities “shed light” on his murder.

In 2019, about half of all murders of journalists around the world occurred in Mexico, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Reporters without Borders has rated Mexico as the most dangerous country for journalists in the Western Hemisphere.

According to the International Federation of Journalists (IJF), 13 journalists were killed in Mexico in 2017, the highest among the countries studied by the IJF.

The United Nations and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights have expressed concern about the impunity surrounding the killing of journalists in Mexico.
