US President Donald Trump has criticized potential name changes of American teams Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians.

In a tweet on Monday, the president slammed the measure as an attempt “to be politically correct,” further dragging Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren into the matter, as always mocking her over past comments about Native American heritage.

“They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct,” Trump said. “Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!”

The Cleveland Indians, a baseball team, and the Washington Redskins, an American football team, are reviewing their names to change them over their racist origins.

The measure comes amid the nation’s struggle with racial injustice and police brutality after the death of George Floyd, an African American, by a white police officer.

“The recent unrest in our community and our country has only underscored the need for us to keep improving as an organization on issues of social justice,” the Cleveland Indians said in a statement Friday. “With that in mind, we are committed to engaging our community and appropriate stakeholders to determine the best path forward with regard to our team name.”

Earlier on Monday, Trump also took issue with NASCAR’s decision to ban the Confederate flag.

Has @BubbaWallace apologized to all of those great NASCAR drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX? That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER!

The president has also opposed similar efforts for some US army bases named after Confederate leaders.
