Spain: Protesters demand government resignation over handling of COVID crisis

Protesters march with a banner reading "Government, resign!" with a black ribbon over a Spanish flag during a demonstration in Madrid on June 27, 2020.

Demonstrators marched through central Madrid on Saturday demanding the resignation of the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez over its handling of the coronavirus crisis.

Footage shows protesters marching with Spanish flags, banging pots and pans as they did during the COVID-19 lockdown, and chanting anti-government slogans.

“For an excessively long time, we have been deprived of our individual freedoms. And the government has failed to fulfil its part of the pact. The result is known and we are ashamed, Spanish people do not deserve a government that lies to them," said a protester.

Spain has been one of the European countries most affected by the pandemic with 248,469 confirmed cases and 28,341 deaths, according to the Health Ministry figures released on Friday
