Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is scheduled to leave Tehran on Monday for an official trip to the Syrian capital of Damascus.

"Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, will leave for Damascus tomorrow, Monday, to meet and talk with Syrian officials," the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, announced on Sunday.

During the one-day trip, Zarif is to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem to discuss bilateral ties and regional developments as well as the latest political and field developments with regard to Syria's fight against terrorism.

The last time the top Iranian diplomat visited the Arab country was in April last year.

During a short visit to Tehran last February, the Syrian president met with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking Iranian officials, underlining the two countries’ cooperation in combating foreign-sponsored terrorism in the region and consolidation of the entire resistance front.

The armed conflict began in Syria in 2011. But the Syrian military, backed by its allies, have taken back control of most of the areas that had been held by militant and terrorist groups.

Syria's Idlib and the area north of Aleppo province form part of the only large territory in the hands of terrorists after the Syrian military managed to undo militant gains across the country and bring back almost all of Syrian soil under government control.
